Social Media Platform X (Twitter) Blocked in Pakistan Over National Security, Ministry Says

ISLAMABAD, April 17 the Pakistani Interior Ministry stated on Wednesday that it has blocked “X“(Twitter) in Pakistan since the February election due to security issues and confirmed an unconfirmed closure. Pakistani users have complained about problems related to “X” (Twitter) for a while since the middle of February. The government, however, didn’t make a statement on the issue until today.

The interior ministry mentioned the shutdown in a letter to the Islamabad High Court on Wednesday. Abdul Moiz Jafri, a lawyer and petitioner, claimed that another court told the government to consider rethinking the ban within one week.

“It is vital to highlight here that Twitter’s inability to abide by the legal guidelines of the Pakistani government and respond to concerns about the use of its platform led to the enactment of blocked “X”(Twitter) in Pakistan,” the ministry stated in its court filing.

The report said X has been unable to address the issue. X waited to respond to the request for comment on Wednesday.

In the ministry report, “The decision to impose an interdiction on Twitter/X in Pakistan was taken to ensure security in the country, keep public order, and safeguard the national integrity.”

Access to X remains limited after the elections on February 8.
